  Merry ChrisHannuKwanzaamas

Somewhere along the line it became inappropriate to say Merry Christmas. I'm supposed to say Happy Holidays instead, but phooey on that. I'll just take this small chance to say that whatever your December holiday is, enjoy it, be safe, and all the best. And whether you do Christmas or not, on December 25--have a merry day. I really do wish you peace and love. Now, onto the shameless self-promotion stuff ...

xThe Quillective Projects
  Benefiting Operation Kindness

In ou know what? Just look up and you'll see a link to The Quillective Project page. It'll tell you everything you want to know and give you some links to the professionals involved. But in a nutshell, The Quillective Project is a collaboration between myself, authors Amber-Jerome~Norrgard, Ben Ditmars, and Robert Zimmerman, and promotional wizardress Kriss Morton. Together we will publish Four Paws, a book of poems to be released in February. All (yes, all) proceeds from the sale of the book will go directly to Operation Kindness. Oh, and if you're a fan of the fab Russell Blake, he's written our foreword for the book.

xWhat's New with WriteHookk
Because of The Quillective Project, I'm looking forward to being on a string of podcasts in January and February to help get the word out, including the SOJCast with Mark Gosson and Stacey Roberts, and Humor Outcast Radio with Donna Cavanaugh.

October 2012: Postponed

I'm not dead, folks, I'm just moving. So I didn't get to the October newletter or webinar. November should see my triumphant return and typical modesty.

Stay tuned and stay in touch.

First Thoughts
:
The Power and the Beauty of Pain

In The Futurological Congress, the great (and sorely missed) Stanislaw Lem displays a future world in which everything is perfect. Technology and humanity coexist. Wants and needs and emotions are all satisfied. Until the gauze is pulled away. Read the rest by subscribing to At the Jugular. Email WriteHookMail@gmail.com; Subject: Subscribe

S ex. Everybody wants it but everybody's afraid to talk about it in a grown-up way. And OK, I admit I still giggle when I say the word "boobs." And OK, I'm actually incredibly awkward and bashful around the ladies, but dammit, Jim, I'm a writer, not a coward, so I finally grew a big enough pair to release a new short (quite short) collection of stories related to the topic of S-E-X.

Titled Love/Sex/Soul, the collection (due out September 8, 2012) is my foray into the craft of sexual writing. It is, at least in the first story, explicit, so don't let anyone under 18 see it. But Love/Sex/Soul is not erotica. It is an exploration of sexual attraction and love and frustration. I sincerely hope people see it as more than something to get them hot.

Shout Outs
Brief Nods To Some Good Stuff

Wright Forbucks. I took the free download offer from this guy because I just loved his name, but I never read it until recently. I wish I had done it sooner. The Walking Man, the chronicle of a paraplegic teenager from New England, doesn't on the surface sound like a fun read, but Forbucks' lively, self-deprecating, flat-out-fucking-funny writing is dynamite. He is legitimately world class, and won't be an indie for long. Uncommon talent. So much so, in fact, that I keep wondering if he's actually a famous author who's just gone slumming under a pen name. But who cares? The book is highly recommended.

Summer Daniels.
Summer Daniels is one of the coolest people on Earth, and she has reached a terrific Facebook milestone: 10,000 likes on her page "What To Read After 50 Shades of Grey." And I can say, anything you read from Summer is going to be better than 50 Shades of Grey. Read her take on the promo in this fab guest blog too.

Randall Peterson.
Randall, quite out of the blue, has become one of my most vociferous promoters. He's taken it upon himself to tell the world to buy and use my latest nonfiction book, How I Make A Living In Writing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Randall. Everyone else: Get to know him. He's @itsonlymeandyou on Twitter.

Gail (Trish) Gentry.
Trish is just flat-out awesome. Supportive, involved, enthusiastic. She's what I want to be when I grow up. Find her on Twitter at @GailTrishGentry and friend her. truly a blessing on the publishing world.

First Thoughts :Maybe You're Born with It ... Maybe You're Full of Shit

I never know whether to be flattered or offended when people read something of mine and say, "Yeah, well that's easy for you, you're a born writer." Actually, scratch that, I do know how I feel. I'm offended.

I'm offended because the implication is that writing comes entirely naturally to me, ergo, I must not have to work at it. Which is a flaming bag of poo, because I work my ass of at this. And besides, I don't believe in natural born anything. I believe in work and study. I think some of us are more inclined toward language or expression, but natural born writer? Go fuck yourself. If I was a natural born writer the doctor would have asked me to sign my books right after he slapped me on the ass and handed me to mom.

I'm a writer because I write and because I work at it. Moreover, I'm a writer because I
read. And not just the stuff I'm interested in. I read indie authors, sure, but I read news stories and blogs and the backs of cereal boxes. I read scripts and business cards and poems and encyclopedias. I read bumper stickers and speeches and reference books and magazines. And I learn something about the craft of writing from all of them. There's nothing natural about it, apart from an innate curiosity to learn new things.

 What's New with WriteHook

It's been a roller coaster of a summer. Which is only marginally better than a roller coaster of love (say what?). I managed to publish a new book, How I Make A Living In Writing, land an unexpected speaking gig before the Princeton, NJ, Chamber of Commerce (they actually asked me), and develop a newsletter. I was delightfully surprised to see that How I Make A Living In Writing hit the Amazon Top 15 within twelve hours of its release. Thank you to those of you who've bought it. I sincerely hope it helps you, and I hope it clarifies the difference between a writer and a writing professional.

Shout Outs: Brief Nods To Some Good Stuff

Charity Parkerson. While I'm not a reader of erotica, I have to take my clothes ... I mean, hat ... off to Charity Parkerson, who's piling up awards like winter firewood. She recently became a third-time winner of the Mistress of the Dark Path Award, and her book The Society of Sinners was a nominee for book of the month among paranormal and horror writers on GoodReads.

Rob (RS) Guthrie.
I love Rob and make no secret that I'm a fan of his work. But his latest book, Dark Prairies, is far and away the best indie book I've read to date. And it's easily one of the upper-echelon novels I've read this year. Read it and be lured in by its dark poetry and its compassionate, philosophical perspectives on family, brutality, and identity.
